Prey is a first-person shooter video game developed by Human Head Studios and produced by 3D Realms. It was released in 2006, but had been in development in one form or another since 1995, and has had several major revisions. While the general approach to gameplay, including the use of portals, remained the same, the story and setting changed several times. The game received generally positive reviews and was a commercial success, selling more than one million copies and leading to the development of a sequel expected to be released in 2008.[2]

Game presentation

Plot

The story focuses on Domasi Tawodi (Cherokee) (aka Tommy), a Cherokee garage mechanic and former U.S. Army soldier living on a Native American reservation in Oklahoma. At the beginning of the game, Tommy is in a bar owned by his girlfriend, Jen. Tommy is tired of living on the reservation, and constantly tries to push his heritage away, while at the same time trying to convince Jen to leave home, if only for a short while, to which she refuses steadfastly. After an unfortunate bar fight, the entire building is lifted up by a gravitational force into a green light above. Tommy, Jen, and Tommy's grandfather, Enisi, are transported back to the massive alien starship called the Sphere. After docking, all three, along with countless other captives, are dragged through the upper levels of the Sphere. Tommy is freed in an explosion set off by a stranger who, despite being cybernetic like most of the Sphere's denizens, appears to be working against it rather than for it.

Tommy witnesses Enisi's death in a brutal alien device. While trying to find Jen, he falls from a walkway and has a near-death experience where he meets with his grandfather's spirit who bestows him with spiritual powers. After returning to the world of the living, Tommy gains the ability to spirit-walk, allowing him to separate from his body to pass through forcefields and operate consoles normally out of reach, as well as the aid of his spirit guide, the ghost of his childhood pet hawk, named Talon. Despite being entrusted by his ancestor's spirits with the mission to protect all of mankind from the sphere's invasion, Tommy can't stop worrying about Jen, and he only cares about how to find and rescue her. As the game's tagline says, "Earth's savior doesn't want the job."[2]

Commands user guide

That will show which is the best way to input a command depending on your usage (for instance how to enable the frame rate counter). Note that if you only remember the beginning of a command, you can just type it then press the TAB key to browse all commands starting with the letters you typed.

Location Syntax Use
Console com_showFPS 1 To have an immediate effect (most of the time)
"x".cfg com_showFPS “1” To have multiple .cfg files (i.e. configuration files). If you create a .cfg file named autoexec.cfg, this file will load every time Prey is launched. You can create as many additional .cfg files as you want, for instance sp.cfg and mp.cfg could be used to contain your preferred settings respectively for single player and multiplayer. These settings can then be loaded via the console using the command exec sp.cfg or exec mp.cfg.
qConfig.cfg seta com_showFPS "1" To have an automatic loading of your command at starting. Prey automatically loads qConfig.cfg every time the game is loaded (this is where it stores all settings). The values here are prefixed with seta as this is the value to be loaded every time Prey is launched.
Prey shortcut "C:\Program Files\Prey\Prey.exe" +set com_showFPS 1 To force the game to initiate a command when it starts.

Creating your own .cfg file is simple: create a new file and name it as the_name_you_want.cfg (just make sure you don't put spaces in the file name, to avoid troubles), then edit it with any plain-text editor (Notepad, Notepad++, etc). You may want to create several game shortcuts to have your .cfg files loaded automatically. Example: "C:\Program Files\Prey\Prey.exe" +exec sp.cfg.

Most common problems

Non-working mouse issue

With some mouse drivers, it may occur that the sight doesn't move when you move your mouse. To fix this, go to Control panel → mouse → pointer options then disable "enhance pointer precision" and apply. After that go back to the mouse control panel and re enable "enhance pointer precision". When you relaunch Prey, the mouse should now work.
